Hi, so far I have generally kept trees either alive or indeed some trees have thrived.

However, my first tree, a Chinese elm that I got early last year, does look very poorly this year. It was very healthy all last year, and was kept in-doors in a cool room over winter. This spring it's failed to shoot any new shoots, and the few leaves left on its are gradually falling off.

I repotted it (in acadama) in late spring in case the roots were compromised (they were pretty poor - mainly thick long roots, little fibrous mass). The last two months of outside partial sun has failed to make a difference. My first tree death coming up? Any thoughts? Any lessons I can learn? Will I be shunned by all fellow bonsai-ists?

:(

How much work did you do when you re potted it???

I would make sure the soil was damp and put the whole lot into a clear plastic bag, blow it up and seal the top. This will increase the humidity and it will form its own micro climate. The inside of the bag will run with water and every now and again blow the bag up again. Make sure it is placed into a shade area and then cross your fingers. In a few weeks you should see some new growth, and it can then be removed but kept in the shade but good light. If you put it in the sun it could get fried and you need to give the new growth a chance to grow

With all the problems you are having with your trees, are you sure that no one has been spraying weedkiller or similar. It can drift in the wind??

Also when do you water all your trees and where are you keeping them?? I can't remember if you put this on your other posts

what Paul said :smallthumb: if the roots were very bad then its best not to give it any sun until you see growth, imo.

you got to learn from the mistakes bud, but first you need to figure out what went wrong... thats what this part of the forum is often about :smallthumb:

Thanks Paul & Bill - now done. If it lives, I'll name it after you. :)

I think my trees are safe from interference, the only enemy is me. The issues all seem unrelated. My other 15 or so trees seem happy.

With this elm, I removed about a third of roots, rinsed the remaining roots in water to remove existing soil, and then repotted. The rootball seemed poor to my untrained eye. The repotting was late, about mid April, in response to lack of thriving. So: lesson 1: don't repot mid-spring, even if the tree seems poorly...

just call it "Paul" (no offence, im not into naming trees)

generally its not a good idea to repot a weak tree. if drainage is the problem, there are other ways of dealing with it rather than the full repot. chinese elm can take a while to recover from heavy rootwork. light rootwork on a weak tree is fairly comparable: the tree will be set back further e.g. delayed leafing out.

like i said on the oak thread, the (weak) tree needs to go into shade until you see new growth. this is a sign that the roots are recovering; you can then feed and move to a better lit position. bear in mind the demand for water will increase then.

if its windy, you have even more demand, so a combo of sun + wind + weak roots will result in the tree drying out. pauls suggestion of tying it up in plastic helps keep it moist long enough for it to regrow roots. it works well.

conifers work different, this is for most broadleaf deciduous

Thanks! Emergency care is in progress.

My only conifer is a Podocarpus, and that is well! I'll get back in touch if I screw that up...

I have an elm that looks exactly like this - has done for months. Just to be clear, in the advice you give above, do you mean place the whole tree within the sealed bag, or just the pot, up to the base of the trunk?

Cheers.

Whole thing. Make a little closed plastic environment for it like a mini greenhouse. Open it up daily for a few mins to circulate air and keep it inflated by blowing into it

EscMode - there is no time to loose in this weather! It's the whole tree: not just creating a humid micro-climate but also keeping drying winds etc from causing untimely moisture loss from any part of the tree. Fingers crossed for both of our trees!

got it - thanks. Issue with mine I think, is due to being moved from indoors (to the freedom) of outdoors.
