Post subject:  It's all going wrong, part 2 – English oak

Hi again,

Around two months ago I bought an oak sapling off eBay (yes, I've learned my lesson now, I promise not to do it again). It came in a tiny bonsai pot, somewhat wilting with yellowing leaves. Poor thing.

I planted it immediately in a much larger container in a mix of cat litter and compost. I understand that oak likes full sun, but this has not agreed with it, or I am doing something else wrong? I am watering it a little every day, trying to compensate for lack of roots. I have fed it as I would other growing trees, but now I think this might have been premature, as simple survival is all I shoul aim for just now.

Any advice? Much appreciated.

like the chinese elm, i would give it shade >> oak like full sun but no deciduous likes full sun with a weak rootsystem; the demand for water in the sun is too high for the roots to supply. most trees that are weak in the roots (for whatever reason) take a year to reestablish, some 2 or even 3 so it hasn't all gone wrong yet.
