Hi everyone,

A young, dear friend of mine passed away very suddenly last night, and this morning I found myself unable to stay indoors so I took a nice 5 mile walk to the garden centre (and have probs got sunburn from it). While there, I picked up two acer, a palmatum(sp?) and an orange dream I think the others called. They are not suitable for bonsai yet, the trunks are way too thin, but the only larger acers were grafted. I was hoping to grow them for a good long while then work on them. They'll have to go in pots because I'm moving house, but I was wondering how big the pots should be?

This is the pal:

And this is the orange:

Both are in small pots, and are a little over a foot tall. I have them outdoors in a shaded location. Watered them well and gave a dilute feed. How many years do you think before they're bonsai ready?

I'm also going to attach a couple of pics of my fukien tea (no haters please hahaha). Its not overly attractive, but I love it and its growing well, started putting out new growth. I'll attach a pic of the medium its in. Its just soil i think. I water pretty much every day as it does dry out pretty quick, and seems free draining - water comes out really quick when watering. Will it be ok in this mefium for a while? Would rather not repot if I don't have to.

Medium looks wet as it was watered a coulle of hours ago. Apologies for the long post, but thank you for any help!

Daniel

1st acer is acer palmatum 'atropupureum' not so good for bonsai.
If the 2nd is 'orange dream' these are very good for bonsai.

Oh, I'd read acer pal were ideal for bonsai? Oh well I'll still give it a go when its had a year or two to grow!

U will find that the red leaved varieties of maple tend to have larger courser leaves. Although it is possible to create a bonsai from them you are better sticking to the green leaved plants

I would repot the fukien tea next spring, as you say the plant is doing well and it seems to drain well, but it will do better in a more open, inorganic substrate. Such as akadama, molar clay etc...

Thanks for the replies :) wondering if you guys have any idea how big the pots for the acer should be? Or how long til theyre big enough to work on (was thinking 2 years). Im glad the orange will do well for bonsai, i hear they can be very nice

Well I potted them up to larger pots in agood free draining mix. Just a slip pot, didn't disturb the roots, but they were ridiculously potbound! The new pot aren't massive, maybe 4-5 times the volume of the previous pots, but all I had in. I'm not too bothered about them growing into potential bonsai material any time soon, they're more side projects while I tend to actual bonsai trees. I'll pot them up again in a year or two whenever its needed.

As for feeding, am I right in assuming leave it for 4-6 weeks? I just potted them into B&Q's bonsai soil. If I was potting actual bonsai I would sieve out the finer grains (leaves a nice free drainibg mix of bark, perlite and other bits) but as they're still just plants I left the finer stuff in. Theyre now in a shaded location, sheltered from winds. Well watered, but its due to pour down tonight so some nice natural rain water for them!

Not wanting to rain on your parade, Daniel, but from my experience over many years of having these types of acer grown in a garden situation (you can't get a bigger pot than that!) they thick glacially slowly. I have some in the garden I have now which I thought, mistakenly might make bonsai material, just because they had very unusual foliage and would have made interesting bonsai. Unfortunately, they are only marginally thicker than when I put them in the ground. One of the other problems is that it is difficult to get them to back bud closer to the trunk and so you end up with long leggy branches with a few leaves on the end.
Please persevere with these, but I think in order to fulfill the insatiable urge to 'do something' with trees, you would be better to look for a few small but well branched shrubs in the garden centre which you can play about with and learn a lot rather than watching your maples in the ground.
You could also see if anyone you know (probably when you move) is digging up a privet hedge or similar as these make wonderful first projects to start with. :smallthumb:

Thanks Gwen,

Yeah I expected a loooooong wait with them. Not overly bothered about them being bonsai material any time soon. I can enjoy them as plants, because I've ways liked acers :) im gonna make some pretty decent purchases when the next installment of student loan comes in :)
