Hey guys, I've just ordered 6 small Silver Birch saplings: Attachment: $_57_2.jpg I'd like to create a group planting with 5 of them. My question... is it better to develop these in individual pots until the trunk diameter is about right... or can this be done as a group planting, even at this early stage of their growth? I'd probably put them in a large pond basket or maybe even this: Attachment: $T2eC16JHJIQE9qUHrWnMBQc+1R3vV!~~60_57.JPG (I don't have any garden to plant them in btw, I have a concrete courtyard) |

Group plantings look best in odd numbers, preferably with trees of different sizes and ages. The suggested containers for growing on are fine in the absence of a garden but don't be tempted to take them inside at all. I would grow five together and keep the sixth planted separately as a reserve for any unfortunate loss. |

Nice; I love birch. Where are your saplings from? Good luck. I have been thinking of getting some bare-root saplings this winter, but it would be good to get something going sooner... |

Off E-bay. lol But only £9. I'll let you know their condition when they arrive. I'm thinking now that I might plant these individually, in pond baskets of ( of varying sizes to encourage different rate-of-growth) for 2-3 of years first. What do you's all think? |

Good idea to bring them on individually, then in 3/4 years they can be partly trained and ready for a forest |
