Post subject:  False cypress or ? - and can it be styled?

As with alot of my other material this one is not ideal for styling. I guess its due to being new to the hobby (3 years in) and a habbit of just collecting everything that grows when I started (I guess alot of newbies does that). Now I have this material and dont want to bin it at least not before I have tried something with it.

This tree was collected from a friends garden 2 years ago. I have always thought it was some kind of false cypress (Chamaecyparis) but im not even sure. Can anyone tell me? It looks a bit like juvenile scales but I dont remember that the scales were any different on the tree when it was growing in the grond.

Now for the style. It has these multiple straight trunks comming from the base and then all the foliage growing at the end of some rather long but very flexible branches. It has nice bark at the base but no small branches are growing from there. I guess I could just "pig tail" some of the branches closer to the trunks and then make some deadwood features at the tops of the trunks? Any other suggestions? Maybe tilt the tree in an other direction or make some kind of semi-cascade? :)

Looks like Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Elwoodii'. Not the best of plants to try & bonsai :132doh:

When left to grow naturally these trees Have a columner shape. The foliage on the ends of branches shades the inner parts of the column and we are left with a tube of green full of dead brown inside. My way, if I wished to grow one as bonsai, would be to keep it thinned out so that light can get inside to avoid this die back. Most bonsai growers would avoid it but I have seen some creditable results from growers who persevered with them.

Piotr tried one and may have some tips to pass on following his experience in N.I.

The problem with Chamaecyparis is the lack of back budding and as far as I am aware this can't be overcome, so while they look like a good bonsai candidate they aren't really. I bought a small one cheaply, garden centre stock, it was good for wiring and styling practice but it is never going to be a good tree.

looks like a good candidate to practice some serious bending on. im talking splitting those trunks vertically into 4 or 5 sections and carving them down; for a little taper and less wood = easier to bend (obvs). wrap with rubber or raffia and bend the heck out of them. perhaps some jins also. it would allow way more options as to where you can put the foliage. my 2c
