I know winter is a long way off but I'd like to get my head around how to winter over way before it comes. Can anyone give me a heads up please?

Trees that grow naturally in our climate will need no special treatment. If you have something semi-tropical which is not hardy here, it may need shelter from the elements by November. We really need to know the specific varieties that you are concerned about.

It should be illegal to talk about winter in June, no advice from me :120ranting:

I think the best winter protection is a cold greenhouse. Tropical species will need extra heat, but the majority of temperate trees and also half-hardy species such as Chinese Elm and Pomegranite will be able to cope with the cold as long as they are kept on the dry side and out of freezing winds.

Bring them indoors, put them on the lounge window sill....

Aaagh! I've died an instant death by the combined dissaproval of forum members! :)

Just kidding, I'm reformed. I just need to work out how to keep most of the rain off the more delicate trees whilst outside. Small trees in the greenhouse, and cover the pots of other trees?

Sorry for the EARLY post but I don't want to get to winter and then start researching.

I have maples, Chinese elm and Japanese larch. From what I've read even temperate trees need some protection because they are potted, or have I got that wrong?

The trees you list would just be left out on my benches all year round.

The maple and larch are very hardy and the ch elm I wouldn't do anything special with until it gets below -5C. The only 'protection' is keeping the rain off so under the benches or a cover similar to don's that slips over the pot.

I too have all the trees you have listed and I NEVER leave any of my trees to chance so depending on how the weather is going I try to leave them out as long as I can then they all go into an unheated garage which has plenty of light until early to mid march and so far so good hope this helps  though I have to say you do have time to submit plans an build a garage by November :07hysterical:
