Very mature tree growing in the allotment with really nice bark..

The leaves are large, with white flowers....

and also, can anyone ID the plant growing in the bottom left corner of the first pic? it has small leaves and flowerbuds, looks like some sort of shrub.

I think the shrub might be one of the dogwood family

Cheers Smithy, I assume its not a suitable species for bonsai, i just looked and there isnt much for examples on the web or a write up on bonsai4me ;-)

Thanks Daryl, there is quite a bit of it growing there, seems to be all clumpy and straight stems from the bits i can see though..

I concur with Smithy as Eider. However, these are more like shrubs than big trees so it may be that there are two different species.
I seem to recall that the Eider has a hollow stem. As if someone has taken the pith....
