Hi all, we have this quite attractive small mature tree in our garden... About 3-4 metres tall, masses of deep red soft berries in autumn, the size/ shape of small grapes, with a relatively big hard stone in the middle. Leaves are up to 8cm long and 6cm wide, though many leaves are smaller.

Is it some form of cotoneaster? There are a couple of small saplings growing underneath... Tempting for putting in pots!!

That's a Cornus mas.

Yes, the big tree looks like a Cornus.

The seedlings, however, are a different species, probably Cotoneaster. Note how the big tree has opposite leaves and the seedling has alternating leaves. Quite different.

i agree with Nick, the vein patterns on the leaves are also different.

Thanks all, you're so damn clever, and very right. Much appreciated.

I've been wanting to see dogwood at some stage, and there it is, right outside my door!!

As for the saplings, definitely NOT Cornus. Such an idiot - I'll look more closely next time...

I'm so pleased with knowing what the tree is - but you know this means that I'll keep on asking more questions! Thanks again. :)
