Hi everyone,

I'm new to bonsais trees, but I have a banyan fig and a chinese elm. The elm I bought yesterday as the tree itself is what I was after, but the soil is really degraded and really doesn't drain well. Would I be OK to re-pot it at this time of year/so soon after purchase or is it a bit late in the year? It's already the size and shape that I'd like, and will be staying in the same pot.

The ficus I've had for a month or so now, and it's root-bound - it comes out the pot easily so I can see.. Again, I think this would benefit from a root prune, and new soil. It was very scraggly and unkempt when I bought it with no branch structure, but the trunk was what I was after, so I've trimmed it back and kept what will become it's branches, these are new putting out fresh leaves. Will this be OK to have a root prune? How long will this likely slow the growth of the leaves for?

Thank you in advance,

Josh

if the chinese elm has to stay in the same pot then no, i wouldn't repot it now. if its in a congealed lump of clay or similar, you could get a metal bbq skewer and poke holes down through to allow water to penetrate into the rootball easier.

Agree with Bill for the Chinese Elm. As far as the fig goes, as it is generally regarded as an indoor plant in this country you should be OK to repot it at almost any time. I would leave it for a few weeks to recover from what you have just done and then repot it.
You don't say where you are keeping these trees. At the moment, the Chinese Elm will like being outside.

Hiya,

Thanks for the replies - I live in a flat, so unfortunately I have no garden.. They are on a south facing window sill, but I have found that I can perch them on top of the hedge outside the window, so I've been doing this on nice days - seems a bit precarious but it seems to work!

I've read spring is best for repotting elms, would you agree?

Thanks again,

Josh

Yes Josh, you're doing your best there. Early March is the optimum time to re-pot your Elm but as Bill says, open up the planting medium a bit if it isn't draining quickly.

It would be best to keep them outside your window all the time so that they benefit from the cool, humid night air. You could attach something to your outside window sill to make them less precarious. I made this, but you could buy a window box perhaps.
