I've been keeping a close eye one one of my maples, the leafs are turning brown and dying.
This is sporadic throughout the tree effecting old and new.
It's positioned out of wind, afternoon sun only and kept watered.
Any clues please?

Was the tree re-potted this year?

Compare the leaves on the outer canopy to those shaded on the inside. Does it affect those in shade / shelter as well as the outer silhouette? The conditions for maples have not been good these past few weeks in Doncaster - high winds and quite hot temperatures. Also look at where the leaves have dropped from - are new buds pushing from the places where they've dropped?

Leaves are affected throughout the tree new growth as well as old, it is still pushing new growthand looks healthy in areas but random leaves are browning.

So I'm guessing it's not getting enough water ? Or drying out with the warm wind were having atm? I get the odd one or two scorch marks this time of year but this year I've added more moisture retentive substrate so far so good

If it's pushing new growth it is probably as Will said - the combination of wind & sun has dried out the leaf margins. This is especially the case with red leaved varieties (it looks like a (shin) deshojo leaf?).
