Post subject:  Yew Carving project Workshop

I have a substantial Yew yamadori that is ready (I believe) to start its transformation into a Bonsai with its first carving and styling session this Oct. I have not done one of these before so am a little nervous and would like to attend suitable workshop with an experienced carver / stylist for guidance and hands on help if necessary
Can anyone suggest for me based on your own experience any suitable persons or workshops
I realise most of the bonsai centres organise workshops but I feel I need something specific for this. :Big Thumb:

I'd second Will's recommendation. He carved 2 big projects at the Bash (Escallonia & Hawthorn) that came out really well. If you are going to be doing a lot of carving in future you may need to invest in a Makita (die grinder) and dremel plus a range of cutters etc which isn't cheap.

Is this the big yew off Robert? I would highly recommend Will Baddeley to teach carving.

Hi Lee,
Yes it was from Robert about a year ago, I repotted it this spring, chased the roots back and got it into vertical position That photo is just after repotting and other than that I just left it this year. It looks healthy enough, not dramatic growth but some all over and lots of back budding. I think its worked on the roots this year from when I have probed below the surface.
Do you know whether Simon Jones will be hosting a carving session with Will again this year?, that might be my opportunity,

Hi Will & Paul
Corin is my other option and near my home town so Could fit in a visit to Mum!!
I also like some of the work Graham Potter has done at Kaizen, but its such a trek for me to Peterborough.
Paul I already invested in the Makita, now just waiting to blood it.
Ive been looking forward to this all year so want to get it right

of course, as mentioned I will be happy to help you that's what you decide

But It needs styling, not just carving, I'm not sure it will need too much expanse of carving to achieve a good design

I will be posting photos up soon of the carving from this weekends demonstrations for people who couldn't make it

i wouldn't be too hasty with this, sounds like it could do with another season of growth to fully recover from the rootwork?

Only just noticed the photo... Looking good! I told him not to sell that one! lol I recently asked Will and there are currently no plans for another workshop at Simon's. If you can get a handful of people together though, to pay for his time for a day, Will is very reasonable. Also, I would agree with Corin... I don't feel there is a great deal of carving to be done unless there is a particular plan you have in mind? I think that creating some shari would be the most beneficial thing to add some character. The other option is to hold on until next year and book a place at Burrs... Always lots of expert advice and help with carving and styling, plus a fantastic weekend.
