Hi guys this is a tree that I've been working on for the last 3 years. It was growing in a friends garden and he chopped the trunk down dug it up and threw it in the bin I went over to see him a couple of days later and all I saw was the top of the trunk with that lovely bark sticking out of the bin so I took it home and planted it in the garden for the winter. By spring the tree had thrown out a bit of green stuff so I dug it back up washed and pruned the roots and planted it in the training pot it's in now. From the yellow colour of the wood and the roots I think this tree is some kind of Berberis but not sure so if someone can tell me what it is that would be really helpful. Now to be honest I would not recommend this tree as wiring it is a very painful experience with the spines on the leaves being surgically sharp but all that being said I think the snake like roots and the texture of the bark has made it an attractive tree. Cheers Nigel. |

It could be some variety of Mahonia. Roger |

Yup it's Mahonia - it has yellow pannicled flowers. It's common name is holly leaved barberry (berberis) so it must be a relative of some kind. Watch out for and remove suckers. Although Jerry advocates a chop IMO it needs to stay big as those compound leaves will obscure much of the trunk and branch structure if small. I don't think I've ever seen a mahonia bonsai'ed so I can't say if the leaves reduce at all. Good luck with the tree and get some kevlar gloves for pruning lol - it's a berberis on steroids. |

Hi Paul I agree with all you've said and as for the foliage yes it's brutal. Cheers Nigel. |
