I took 7 privet cuttings, bunged them in a pot of akadama, and stuck a cut coke bottle over the top of them in October. Needless to say, after 3 weeks outside at that time of year, they didn't strike (I'm one of those plonkers who can't leave cuttings alone). I brought the pot and makeshift propagating bell in, and put them in our South-facing window. Now 3 weeks on, they have roots growing out of the bottom of the pot! I'm wary that keeping them there from now on may kill them, what with being in a window bay with the curtains shut behind them. I'm also aware that putting them outside is not an option. I really don't know how to winter them indoors. |

Gareth - I don't understand why outside is not an option. If roots are growing out of the bottom of the pot, the cuttings must surely be well established by now, and privet is a fairly tough plant. So, remove the bell jar, and stick'em out in the garden to overwinter as though they had naturally grown. Problem solved? SJ |

SJ I've always been wary of putting trees which have either been grown inside, or that have struck roots inside, straight outdoors into the winter without a necessary 'cooling off' season. I assumed it's similar to buying a bonsai from Homebase (grown indoors), and then putting it outside in December/January. I guess it's all about acclimatisation with their fleshy roots - whether or not the story has legs is a different story. On the other hand, this Chinese Privet (said cuttings are in fact Chinese privet) had been grown indoors by it's previous owner, spending its winter in a conservatory. A majority of the cuttings I've taken have struck more successfully indoors. I do have a heat mat which they could go on in a North-facing window. If they can in fact join the softwood cuttings outdoors though, then they shall! |

The roots are coming out of the bottom, probably because they're planted right to the bottom (covered about 2.5"), and sat in a very very small pot of water for both humidity and to prevent it drying. I don't have an unheated room unfortunately. |

It's strange as, i bought a gorgeous ligustrum years ago from the carboot sale (an ex- florist ), the tree was kept in the conservatory through winter, i re-potted it about three years later as it wasn't looking too good, the roots were infested with bright white root aphids which were combed out and killed, the roots had gone around the pot about four times and were about five feet long it bounced back beautifully but then it was kept in a cold greenhouse through winter for a couple of years, this it didn't like (but the wife was moaning about to many plants in the conservatory), it got worse so i thought it would benifit again from a re-pott, the tree all but died....there are only the bottom two branches left now ....i just thought it strange that a plant that is around nearly everyone's garden year in and out did better inside than out John |
