My guess would be Albizia julibrissin, Persian Silk Tree. Mimosa is one of those names that gets applied to multiple species/genus. |

Self seeded, my best guess is field maple. |

cmarkr wrote: Self seeded, my best guess is field maple. Tricky to be accurate because they're new leaves, but from the number of secondary veins and the way the leaves curve, I'd guess something closer to sycamore. |

That would be a shame but is a more likely source of seeds. I'll keep some hope though as the leaf size is significantly smaller than sycamore tend to be (even new leaves in my experience) and there's no serration. |

Hello, I'm new to Bonsai and was recently given these two trees and I'm hoping that someone can help identify them, thanks: |

I think both your trees are reasonably good for beginners, as long as you keep them in full sunlight. The second one is crab apple, which is deciduous so you'll have the benefit of comparing one evergreen and the other deciduous. Both survive easily both in hot and cold conditions. Both like a lot of water, without leaving them in standing water. The crabapple drinks tons, the olive can go a bit drier before watering. I'm surprised that there are still flowers on the crab apple. But I can see one small apple forming there too. Have fun! |

Thanks, someone else told me they thought the other was a crab apple so it's very nice to have conformation. I have an Azalea as well that's very young and so far they all seem to be doing well. The olive has a couple of what I think are dead branches, I think you can see them in the photo, are they fine to prune whenever? |

You can prune off dead branches at any time. But if you're cutting into live material, leave about 1cm space above your last "Wanted" leaf because it can die back a bit from your cut point. |
