Not sure about the species, Google Lens says it's Swedish Whitebeam. But it looks like it might have an infestation of mites or something, look at the white lumps on the leaves?? |

Hello, I bought this quite cheap with plans to grow a nice shohin tree, but would appreciate some confirmation of it’s species. I suspect Zelkova (it was sold as an indoor plant, I’ll be growing it outdoors), or maybe Chinese Elm. Any obvious differences? |

Hi! Bit difficult to tell when they're wet but they look more like elm leaves, probably Chinese Elm. Zelkova Serrata leaves are generally courser and bigger than CE, the zelkova have a matt/hairy surface whereas the CE leaves are more shiny, and slightly darker than zelkova. In this album you can see a CE cutting for comparison: https://flic.kr/s/aHsmMhnKdr And this is a zelkova on the left - you can zoom in to the leaves: https://flic.kr/p/2j44DL6 |

Or, if you take a look at this video, at 5.06 you can see a close-up of Zelkova leaves, and then at 6.01 you can clearly see chinese elm leaves. https://youtu.be/rziuv_Cdf-U |

Thank you for the well informed reply! I think you’re right, it seems more likely to be CE after looking at the pictures of your cutting and your video (which is excellent by the way, new subscriber here) |

Over the last few months I've noticed that a lot of imported trees are now being labelled as zelkova, whereas they are really Chinese elms. |

Hi Quote: Over the last few months I've noticed that a lot of imported trees are now being labelled as zelkova, whereas they are really Chinese elms. It is often done to bypass import/export restrictions. |

Help with an ID on this one? I haven't seen it in the flesh, this is a pic from a mate who has offered it to me: ![]() |
