I'm in complete agreement with your tipster. Years differ; If they were all the same, we could say the 7th of March every time. Just watch the weather afterwards. |

Glad to hear this is advice, was feeling a bit silly starting to repot now but even the plants that have had no protection are ready to leaf, had to dig up my almond as it had new leaves in December. |

i agree with the advice, but this is getting more difficult with the weather. i would say this is too early. if a cold spell follows this mild one, those buds may stop what they are doing. generally, downy birch take root pruning well and although ive never done them this early, i have repotted several weeks early with no dire consequences. it can make them a bit late to shoot out. we don't get much frost here though, so like Don said, keep an eye on the weather. |

Thanks - I HAVE repotted, and have put the tree in the greenhouse in case of more harsh frost. Birch seems pretty tough, good for beginners like me.... |

Time will tell if it's the right call or not. To me the question is what is more risky - the early repot or the late repot. Discussed this recently on another thread. I think basically a repot now is fine if the weather stays good or you have protection (like you do). To my thinking if a cold snap sets in and the trees are unprotected you might end up with much slower growth in the following season. |

This year is exceptional though - never repot by a calendar but know it's unpredictabilities too and I know as we approach mid Feb the chances of extreme, prolonged cold drop quite markedly. |
