Hi everyone, Is it safe to bare root a cotoneaster, or do I need to do it in stages? I am changing the medium from compost to a gritty mix. Thanks, Jason. |

Hi Should be fine. Cotoneasters are pretty hardy beasts and will take a lot of punishment. Don't trim more than a third off the roots. Use a hose to wash the old soil off. Make sure you fill all the gaps under the roots with the new substrate. I use a chopstick to GENTLY poke the soil under and into the rootball, and when you think you can't get any more in, drop the pot into a bowl of water for a few minutes, and when you lift it out, you will see where there are still gaps to fill! Put the tree in a sheltered place for a few weeks to recover before any fertiliser is given. |

I repotted a cotoneaster from garden soil to a pond basket of moler last week. Method exactly as Keith recommended but I did also add some mycorrhizal fungi and watered it in well with a seaweed growth stimulant to give it a kick start. Maybe unnecessary but it's just what I do and it seems to work for me. |

Go for it Jason. I have given you your first belt. We would be pleased to see a photograph of your tree when it is convenient. |

Hi Stymie, I am having trouble trying to post a photo. The image is rotated on its side when I look at the preview. Any ideas? |

Attachment: 30_07_2015_17_21_41-1.jpg This is my stick in a pot. I left it to grow, but plan to curve the apex and refine the foliage pads.

Nice "stick in a pot" (it's already a lot more than that) and a proper looking wiring job. Keep us posted as it develops. |

Thanks for the confidence boost Gary! This plant was £5.99 garden center material. It's been great pruning and wiring practice. I can highly recommend this species to other newbies, as it has great all year round interest and responds well to abuse. Jase. |
