I collected this oak a couple of winters ago. It seems to have settled in well. This year, possibly due to the mild winter, it kept a bunch of leaves.

I am a bit worried if this tree needed to go dormant? Any advice?

BTW it has been outside all winter on the bench against a wall in a sheltered corner. We had frost on exactly 6 days this winter that I can recall.

Probably was not cold enough where you are.
I have enlarged your photo and looks like new buds are there ready to open
and the leaves also look ok.

My oaks did go dormant, but quinces have been flowering in February. Its the
weather playing havoc.

Bit of autumn colour for this one.

The next step is the start of ramification. I left it to develop strong roots and start to fill the pot with roots. I think oaks can begin to ramify only once they are very healthy and beginning to be pot bound. So a bunch of pruning in store for this one, and some light wiring. But for now a little autumn colour.

I dont think this is an evergreen one or it wouldnt be getting ready to drop leaves n go dormant. oaks will easily ramify with clip and grow and defoliation, they dont have to be pot bound, a well rooted oak may put smaller leaves out.

smallest leaves ive ever seen on an oak were on my own oak

but they went slightly bigger after defoliation....as oaks can do

I was being a bit ironic. All the leaves dropped eventually.

I grew well over the summer.

 Me too. Wife wasn't happy. She complained about my excessive girth and the signs of inverse taper. :1crybaby:
