Post subject:  Help - I've broken something

I was having a look at the cork bark maple I bought last week and as I plan to lower some of the branches over the winter I started to have a little play around, gently bending a couple of branches down only a little bit to see what it would look like when I suddenly heard CRACK and one of the branches on the left hand side snapped clean off. The branch is around 7-8mm thick and is one of the lowest so it's a real shame to lose it and a harsh lesson for me. Is there anything I can do to reattach the brach or have I lost it for good? I feel like such a dumbass! In the vein hope someone can suggest something I have pushed the branch back into the wound and held it in place with wire and wrapped a little cling film around the break to stop it drying out. Please help!

Thanks for the quick reply. Sadly my branch is fully broken off so looks like it's a lost cause according to that article unless anyone else knows otherwise

Damn.
Dan Barton told me - bend it as far as you can but when you hear it snap you should have stopped already...thanks Dan.

shame... it happens

there is a chance it will bud at that point next year so don't cut too close to the trunk!

I always advise to bend the branch until just BEFORE it snaps

yes lesson learnt there Im afraid,

but yes it is true, in my professional opinion

"stop bending the branch just before it snaps" - thats quite true, but it just takes years of experience to gauge when that will happen

and I can still get it wrong

I'm so impressed by the number of really really helpful comments along the line of "stop bending it just before it snaps". That's what's so good about this forum! I sympathise, Jamie, 'cos I lost a branch off my larch when I was dewiring it a couple of months ago - stuck it back on at once in the usual way suggested above, and wired it into place. It still died. Never mind - losing a branch ain't as bad as losing a tree. J.

Indeed. I've given up on a further two trees which I now believe will NOT recover - not happy.
