I'm going to be going abroad for two weeks in a few weeks time and I was wondering what people's solution to the Bonsai's watering needs were while they are on holiday.

Thanks in advance all

I take my trees to a local bonsai nursery who charge me £1 a week per teee to water and care for my trees.

takes any doubt away.

DONT entrust friends who are non bonsai growers, too many horror stories as they simply don't understand the necessity of every day watering.

Completely agree with Deano - try and get them somewhere where they will be with a bonsai person. Fellow club members or a nursery.

If that's not possible then look at a timed system, or bury them in the garden and hope for rain, or both.

Your details suggest that you have only three trees. I would dig a trench that will accommodate them, water it well, introduce the trees and refill up to halfway between the pot and first branch. Water profusely again and top dress with moisture retaining material if you have any. This worked for me when I only had a handful of trees. If you can get someone to water the site as well, that's good but they should be OK anyway.

You could ask Konig San to look after them.

Another last resort option is to seal the trees in clear bags with a cm of water at the bottom and place them in the shade. When you're back, open up the bags gradually over a week or two rather than just taking them out in one go.

Thanks for all the help guys but one of the members from a local bonsai club has kindly agreed to take them in for me over the two weeks and care for them whilst I'm away.

That's the best solution. You can rest easy.

Best option!

Mumra off here also used to care for mine - so much more peace of mind

Just to add to this conversation, I bought this timer a couple of weeks ago and so far it has worked a treat http://www.screwfix.com/p/programmable- ... imer/18480 Way cheaper than the hoselock version - it was £16.99

A godsend during this hot dry spell when I would be spending hours hand watering two or three times a day. I have gathered my trees together in a big forest so they give each other some extra shade and maintain a bit more humidity around them. The timer is connected to a sprinkler that gives a circle of coverage about 3 metres across so they all get a good soak twice a day for 4 minutes :smallthumb:
