Post subject:  Advice needed to turn Dracena Draco to a bonsai

Hi there,

This is my first post on weetrees and also first attempt to create a bonsai. This Dracena is 6 years old and was never really looked after. Just recently I noticed some born leaves (due to overwatering). The soil and the pot is far from ideal. Could someone please suggest a solution how to get it done. The picture was taken yesterday. Right now is sitting like this to get the soil dry a bit. Would it be possible to get it sit on a rock? Every advice is welcome. (Keep in my I'm a total beginner)

Hi!

This is not suitable material to turn into a bonsai. No doubt someone will chime in and say 'give it a go, what have you got to lose', but this species will never look like a tree. They make nice houseplants though.

To get started, I'd suggest picking up a couple of Chinese elms instead.

I totally agree. A nice plant which is not bonsai material.

There are a few examples of it in a bonsai format:

I would start by researching how it grows. If it can cope with having its roots pruned that's what I would try and do first. Once they are smaller and can be reduced to fit into a smaller pot there will be a chance to look at shaping whatever grows at the top.

It is likely to be a challenge as these are not trees suited to our climate.

Don't be disheartened - there are plenty of plants at a garden centre you can buy & style into a bonsai.

Plenty you can find in any urban neighbourhood or even on wasteland.

Thanks for the replies. For me the biggest achievement would be to grow my bonsai's from seeds. I have to do the whole process myself otherwise it feels like a job half way done. That's just my weird way of thinking. Fortunately my wisteria seeds just started to sprout yesterday. I'll give it a go and see how it's going to turn out.

You will be waiting many years if you work from seeds. Don't forget even the masters generally work with mature raw material they either buy or find.

By all means grow some seeds but find some well grown on trees (the reject corner of a garden centre is always worth a rummage) to give you something to work on now.

Trust me. It's much much harder than you'd imagine at first but with time it becomes easier to 'see' where a tree can go. I'd highly recommend joining a club or to find an experienced grower to chat to.

For example I had no idea where I could take a small elm I had but half an hour's chat with Stymie and with us both looking at the tree the problem was solved. I would never have spotted it on my own...

Growing from seed and growing from established material are two methods that are not mutually exclusive. Why not hedge your bets and try both methods at once. Cuttings and layers are an option too, as are existing garden plants.
