Not yet. Quite expensive on Amazon at £42 hardcover only. What's good in your opinion? |

I have it, its a very good book. questions and answers to everything you need to know about bonsai horticulture and development. topped off with stunning detailed images of Walter pall's favourite specimens. its a must have, sort of like an encyclopedia of modern bonsai horticulture. Its very in depth, nothing is missed, a couple snippets ![]() ![]() ![]() Its worth every penny imho. |

The reason I bought it is simple - Walter Pall. If he endorsed the horticulture in this book it is good, as he's about the best in the West (literally, I know nothing about Eastern bonsai masters, but I think he's the best in the West). The detail and info is completely encyclopedic. You could not find this stuff in one place so well explained if you spent a year on tinternet. But it is small print, and it is wordy. |

This is a brilliant book. What I particularly like about it is that it explains why a certain approach or technique should be used rather than just telling me that 'x' or 'y' is the best approach. I'm up to page 90 and I'm very interested in the notion that any tree can be repotted and root-pruned in the summer providing enough foliage is left on for photosynthesis and transpiration. This goes against everything else I've read. Yet I remember repotting some trees in early August a few years ago (when I genuinely knew very little about bonsai) - they all survived and suffered no ill effects - I subsequently put this down to very good luck but this book is getting me to think very differently about some of the things I have read. |

Sounds good. It's on my wish list and my birthday is soon - so who knows - I may be a lucky man. |

He's prolific, and he keeps trees healthy. He also has access to extraordinary material. Whether he's the best or not depends on whether you like Bonsai in the traditional sense, or less refined more "naturalistic" trees. |

I, too, have treated myself to this excellent book which I would recommend to all as a 'must have' investment. Despite about 50% of it being devoted to pictures of WP's bonsai (an inspiration), it doesn't actually deal much in its text with the aesthetics of bonsai - it's much more a practical encyclopaedia of everything you need to know to keep your bonsai healthy. I couldn't find one thing to disagree with, and there's a lot in it to give confidence in looking after our precious trees. Buy it - you won't regret. One question - has anyone worked out what the frequent hash signs signify in the text? I cannot find any reference to them anywhere in the book. (I can't find them on my KB, but you know what I mean - two upright parallel lines and two crossing them at an angle almost horizontal.) John M. |

Hi John The hashtag # simply means 'number' - the 501 principles are in bold italics with the principle number at the end. I agree with your comment - it is all about maintaining healthy trees and understanding the horticulture behind growing them. Aesthetics is obviously important too but this can be down to personal choice. I like the scientific approach that the author takes. There are some impressive trees in the second half of the book but are merely an addd bonus for me. Gavin |
