Yes - more energy, more buds for next year. It's around late summer when the tree is building up it's reserves and thinking about next year that you can cut back and encourage it to invest in buds further back. If you cut back too early you'll probably end up with limited replacement buds roughly form where you cut but not enough energy to back bud. I had a small scottie that wouldn't bud so I left it alone for a year and lo and behold it burst forth the next year. This year I had about 12-15 candles on the apical stem so I removed all bar two when very small and now the trunk has sent out at least that many shoots all around itself. They really do want to grow so you just have to let them get big and strong and energy rich and then cut them back.

Sorry folks - I'm sure you're all getting bored with me keep asking more questions on this! Tom, you suggest to not repot until next March; do you repot Pines in March as a matter of course? Or are you suggesting that for just this example? I am confused as I had read somewhere that repotting Scots Pines is best done around July /August? Or am I going loopy?!

Thanks,

Andy

I normally repot Scots pines in spring, when the buds are starting to show signs of life but not pushing hard yet.

You *can* repot the during late summer too, although I don’t think its been established that it is ‘best’ and I think the very great majority of growers do it in the spring.

In your specific case summer repotting would be counterproductive as you should be using that time to allow the tree to build strength and develop buds.

Agreed. Late summer is an option as it's when a lot of conifers switch from foliar growth to vascular growth and laying down more roots for the following season so they're "in the mood" for building roots following a repot. However spring is the better option in most people's opinion.

Hi folks,

Been checking the trees tonight (before the football if course!) and this Scots Pine has started to form buds at the end of the shoots. Am I still ok to stick to Plan A with this? I was a bit surprised to see next year's buds forming already - if I cut these shoots back in the middle of July, will it reform buds again for next year before the end of this year?

Incidentally, I've got another Scots which has been growing really well - so much so that it has buds that are almost resembling a second flush! I still this normal?!

Yes, but if you want back budding, cut in the middle of August not July.

Great - thanks Tom. And noted ref cutting back in August!

Will the tree just develop more buds on the top of the shoots then? Basically just redoing what it has already done? (And, hopefully, some extra back budding?!)

Hello folks. I'm itching to cut my Scots' back so that I can start watching for back budding! It's August 11th - 12th this weekend, can I take this to be middle of August? Have any of you guys started cutting back yet?

As I was saying before, I cut mine back to buds when I see them rather than trying to force them. I've seen terminal buds but haven't really checked yet for back buds and mine are still in early development. It'll be interesting to see how well this works for you. The more vigorous your tree the more likely you are to have success.
