Post subject:  Large Japanese White Pine advice

I have been lucky enough to have been given this pine. It is about 70cm from the soil level to the top of the tree. It needs some work on styling and probably rotating in the pot at some point to gain a new 'front'.

What I could really do with knowing is what I should be doing with it now. I'm happy to leave major work until next year but do I need to be doing anything with this year's growth to prevent needle drop from further down the branches for example. (my small white pine seems to shed needles once the new growth is set.) All advice is most welcome. What i don't want to do is create a problem for next year by not doing something this year.

Thanks
Gavin

that lower branch looks quite weak and the top very strong, so it needs addressing.

once this years growth has hardened off and opened out, you can feed - prob around the end of this month/septemer time, for around 4-6 weeks. This will prevent this year's growth extending too long

in the winter you can then go about stripping back needles to leave min 5 sets per shoot at the tip, on strong areas,(generally the crown or strong branches) and down to maybe 10-12 sets on weaker areas, leaving alone vey weak areas (inner branches, low thinner areas, shoots on branches closest to the trunk).

you can either pluck each individual needle by hand, or cut the sets down to around 2-3mm. The bud axil is located inside the base of each needle cluster, so pulling the whole cluster out pulls the bud axil out with it, and therefore the tree's ability to release new buds.

Very strong shoots should be cut back to inner buds before they kill them off. Waaaaaaay to much to explain in on e post, so buy this book, and look at the feature on Kimura, it's absolutely essential reading.

My advice would be to book in for one of the classes on pines with a good instructor............you aren't that far from Nottingham [hint, hint] or anyone else you know.

It isn't a young tree and only worth a few quid, so as you say it needs setting on a path to become a good bonsai. It needs completely wiring and then shaping to get some idea of it's future growth.

I am sure that it would be worth the cost and you would gain valuable information. We would give you various ideas but it wouldn't be the same

Hello Gavin

You are more than welcome to bring it to my nursery in Nottingham, where you can book in with me to spend an hour or 2 trimming and wiring it into shape

or you can bring it along to one of my open workshops (will have some in Oct) - yet to schedule them on the website, Oct dates will be available in a week or so, so check back on this link

An update on this pine.

I visited Corin at Greenwood Bonsai yesterday and we spent a couple of hours working on the pine. I say 'we' but Corin did the work while I watched! I'm really pleased with the results. He wired pruned and wired the tree to get it into a good basic shape which is exactly what I wanted. I've included before and after pictures below. We debated whether to lose the bottom left hand branch - although it comes from the inside of the curve, it does give the tree some balance. Corin was very tempted to take it off but we finished by agreeing that it would probably have to come off at some point in the future.

Now that the structure is set, I can focus on ensuring that the foliage develops in the right way over the next couple of years.

Perfect, nicely balanced now. that'll send out new buds beautifully and within 3 or 4 seasons you'll have a very nice white pine.

Thanks - I picked up a copy of the pine book you recommended while I was at Greenwood. They have a few copies back in stock now - apparently it has been reprinted.

I'm all for leaving that bottom left hand branch on. I wouldn't like it as much without it. :30clap2:

Until you have enough length to wire down a hanging branch I agree with Don - at least it stays for now and does a job balancing that side.
