OK, here's the middle trunk bent over to the right, and a bit of trimming and wiring. Enough now - let's see how it copes with the work I have just done.

Keith you are a man of mystery. Your profile says you have been growing bonsai for 3 years, but your experience and stories seem to suggest a different vintage?

Sorry to disappoint you but there is no mystery. I had always loved bonsai so decided to have a go. That was about 37 years ago, with a book from the library, which unfortunately only showed classic masterpieces, as was the norm. Out of that came two bonsai's, both lonicera, one root over rock and the other a broom shape, more pruned than styled. I had just started on the property ladder so I only had a small garden. However about four years later I moved to where we are now, which has a rather large garden (thankfully as my collection is getting bigger). I attempted a couple more, which died and a larch, which I still have. However that has gone through a few changes and I may start a thread for it. I have a love for gardening so some of those techniques roll over to my bonsai work. After moving in, the garden and life took over and it wasn't until about three years ago that my interest in bonsai reawakened. Hence that is why I have put three years on my profile, plus rather than dapple I am now taking it seriously.

Hard to pick a pot where you have a rock. Probably need something in white or black? I am unlikely to think about it for a couple of seasons at least. That will hopefully be a finishing touch.

No-one said it was easy! I think darker would suit myself. As you say the tree's more important than the pot until you near show time.

Update. Just trimmed away a few fine and scruffy roots to make the thick roots clean and prominent. Most work as been focussed on getting the upper section to fill out and produce some tick branches to develop te canopy on.

For root over rock clay is hard to beat at getting the roots to bind close to the rock... I use clay and then wrap strechy tape over the top of the clay to apply more pressure.

You've given me ideas now! I have a low Lonicera hedge at the back of a narrow border. My plan is to halve the width of the hedge and remove the front plants. I have a lot of rocks, so shall use the ones with the most interesting roots. I will put them in the ground for a couple of years, then see what's what. I'll have wait for a few weeks, as the back garden is getting a makeover shortly, and I'm tight for space already while the work is being done.
