Keep eying this up in the gym car park,
Image
presumably some sort of pine

The industrial unit next door looks like it opens its metal gates over it on a regular basis and the top is pretty smashed up
but thats kind of what catches my eye

If theres any potential in there , Id be tempted to see if the owner of the gate wants it out of his way if i just chuck a bit of fresh bark in its place

but i cant help think:
I know pines can be mardy about being disturbed
and im not sure theres enough growth on the top to make it worthwhile
The trunk is verry strait
the foliage is all on quite long branches from the trunk
the base is about 3-4" wide so will probably be a fair slab or roots to dig out

whats anybody think?
or shall i just leave it be

I don't think it's a pine but always have a try. Some of the most imposing trees have found their way into pots from similar places. If it's free, it is always worth it. :smallthumb:

Spruce.

These can be difficult, and I have had no luck with them. I have seen some lovely spruce bonsai though.

I agree it looks like Spruce to me. It will be best to lift it out of the ground when it's dormant through the Winter. These can be very thirsty trees but saying that they don't like water logged conditions so use a good free draining soil mix and then you can give it a good soaking.
Cheers Nigel.

They're not the easiest of trees to transplant - mine's in it's second season and just showing a few signs of vigour.

Can't say no to a potential free 3-4" trunk. Go for it.
