Keep them just moist at all times. Little else will be needed during the next six months. |

Is it not possible to bend or train it to grow differently at the moment? |

Why would you wish to do that? |

Hi Martin, A new challenge is always fun, and gives more opportunities to learn. At this time of year, if you are re-potting , then survival until Spring is the only goal.Following survival, you can plan more exciting things. The usual rule for trees applies: only one major trauma per year. That's why many of us have dozens of trees!! Good luck. Sven |

The chaps are right as ever. These just need to be left to live for a while until next year then a repot. If the maple was mine I'd probably want to let it grow for a few years to thicken the trunk. Same for the cypress but you could probably make a small tree out of it next year if you want to play. You're probably desperate to do things but Sven is right - it's a slow game so many trees just need to be left to get big enough. Of my 150(ish) trees probably 3/4 have had very little (a repot or a basic structural prune) or no work done this year. I still look at them every day but I bought them small and they need to grow so they need to be left alone. |

As a general rule of thumb I stop all bonsai activities in early September so no pruning, wiring etc. If you continue to prune it can cause trees to throw out new shoots when it should be shutting down for winter. Your time now should be spent planning for next growing season. Take some quality pics of your trees against a neutral backdrop at mid trunk height & see how they can be improved. Assess movement, taper, branch placement and come up with a plan for improvement next year. If you're unsure - just ask - that's why we're here. You can look at pots too if you have trees ready to go into them as well as wire, repotting substrate & tools. The hardest thing about this hobby is patience and holding back. I've killed more than my fair share of stuff by either doing too much or doing stuff at the wrong time. |

The acer looks like it is a grafted tree. They present problems because your trunk is always going to have a slight bulge and the graft scars. If you buy an acer from a nursery always go for one that is not grafted. These can be made to work as bonsai with a lot of effort, but I'd almost certainly cal it a garden plant, put it somewhere in the garden where it will be happy, and get another candidate from the nursery. The other tree has a label - what does it say? From that you can research the tree's characteristics and learn what you can and can't do. As for messing around with material and getting a bit of a bonsai fix, I recommend you buy a lonicera. They are utterly bullet proof as bonsai, have tiny leaves and always need something done to them. I must have 10 of them just so I leave my other trees alone. Good Luck! |

I wasnt sure if you had to train it younger to get the desired shape when it gets older. I knocked this up a while back out of some old fencing posts i was going to make a fake well but the price of slate for the roof put me off https://flic.kr/p/MroLYQ I might put it in the front garden and put the acer in it (not for bonsai) when would be best for this? who knows it might look alright to do somthing with it in a few years or use it for cuttings maybe when ive read learnt and studied more about bonsai. And find a better more suitable acer for bonsai The other one is a cupressus gold crest wilma but i kind of did this.. https://flic.kr/p/MndEx2 https://flic.kr/p/Lx7oQo Im calling this my experimental tree im going to play around with it and if it dies im not going to loose any sleep I shall look into a linicera. Brendan why are you shooting at your trees? Have you just revealed a secret jedi styling technece lol :) |
