Does needle cutting apply to other pines as well, or just Black?
It's the first time ever that I have come across this suggestion.

John, not JWP because it simply is not necessary...or it shouldn't be anyway. Mugo's again can be kept shorter with a varying techniques. As for Scots which is probably one of our most used, I regularly cut random needles. It takes me two to three years to reduce them down to just over an inch in length...well mostly anyway, there will always however be random needles that will be much longer and hence I cut them to match the others.

Yes the ends initially turn brown but in time this small brown tip falls off and you hardly notice it. I even try to get a point to match others. Needle plucking is also a possibility but you need to be a tad careful on what years growth you remove and precisely how many and on what part of the tree and of course not all in one hit either. I would usually spread minor plucking over about 3 weeks or so.

Now is absolutely fine for cutting of needles. I would not be looking to reduce next years candles that are already formed right now. Far better to wait until they elongate in late Spring early Summer and either pinch out completely which will have the affect of back budding with smaller candles or reduce overall growth at that time to enhance either and existing shape or go towards the creation of a new one.

Hope that seems clear.

Mike

I dont actually cut through the needles, it can be done to produce new needle growth but overall with JBP plucking the needles at the corrent time is better then cutting through them. I dont know how it would affect the tree over there. but like i said if you can get your hands on the bonsai Boon dvd's they are well worth it!

JWP and other 5 needle pines are different set of techniques, so dont use the JBP techniques on other 5 needle pine. generally 2 needle or 3 needle pine should be fine with the JBP techniques. best thing to do though if you are unsure is to ask, forums are great for this sort of thing as everyone learns something, if you are still unsure about everything and you are a member of a club take a tree down to the next meeting and have a chat with someone who is experienced in JBP. watch what they do and even write notes, that way you will have some info written down that you understand.

Mike / Jamie - Good couple of little pointers in here. Maybe this is something Don could add to the Bonsai ABC section?
