Thanks guys. Yes it is well secured and at the top of the garden in a semi shaded, sheltered spot. :Big Thumb:

Well almost a year on since my last post in this thread. The top that I bent up and carved sent out loads of new shoots. So much that they had to be trimmed back. However like Gary's recent post regarding his wilting leaf problems, I noticed this morning that the leaves on the top section have now turned yellow. I am hopping that this is due to the blazing hot weather we have experienced over the past couple of days and will rectify itself with the extra watering its now had. If it doesn't then its air layer time......

I'm not holding out much hope. But remove the dead leaves gently and wait. These are tough trees.

It wouldn’t have anything to do with the screw and bracing you’ve applied to wire up the apex would it?

I have had branches guy wired down fail in the past. I can only presume the added stress increases their susceptibility to other issues like drought or fungal or viral problems.

I doubt if its the screw but I am sure it could well be the point where it was bent, although I did it as gentle as possible and tried not to stress it. However the remaining layer transferring water etc is only about a 1/3rd of the diameter so I suppose its being asked to do a lot.

Yes, I'll remove those leaves and give it a chance. If it has died I think I will chop it back and carve it hard...Bobby style.

I was just writing a post along these lines and I think you're right. The reduced capacity and the hot weather combined has not been a good mix.

ALL SORTED.............

I took all the dead leaves off this afternoon and removed the guy wire. The portion that I had bent had set well. However the actual portion remaining was about a 1/4 and not 1/3rd as I had thought.

After much dilemma I decided it wasn't worth waiting another season for, plus there were several other factors that finally swayed me into giving it the chop. I have no regrets trying what I did but there has to come a time when you put your hand up and say move it on. It was a big learning curve and I am proud that it produced as much growth as it did.

Here's the pictures after the chop. I now have to decide where I'm going the carve......
