Post subject:  Collecting large Forsythia

I have been giving the permission to collect a large forsythia this weekend. The information I could find about this species says to hard prune after flowering which is not yet even though they flower early. Does anyone have any experience with collecting large forsythia and the after care? Do they backbud on old wood when I collect at this time of the year? I will keep it frost free for the rest of the winter.

Anyway i'm going to give it a try and will post pictures in this thread when I get it home. :)

Regards,
Henrik

I collected mine out of a skip after it had been baking in very hot sun for several hours. So it will take quite a lot of abuse and if kept hydrated will bounce back. They will burst buds everywhere on the trunk if cut back later in the year.

Older branches tend to be hollow and are brittle if you need to bend anything, so cut and grow is best. It can also rot from within the trunk, which is what seems to have happened to mine and I think that I have lost some of the top and will have to cut back and start again this year.

Roots grow mad and usually they will push themselves out of the pot so need re potting every year. Don't plant in too small or shallow a pot. You should get a lot of young fleshy roots and a lot will get damaged or fall off during re potting but they just seem to bounce back even if a lot of root is removed.

Worth giving it a go and don't forget to post a photo of yours later. The wood is quite hard to carve or cut, so it will need something sharp

Thank you for sharing info and posting some nice examples. I think the tree is about the same size or maybe a bit larger than the one you have RoyH. I will give it a go tomorrow and snap some pictures before and after the collection.

I forgot to add this picture that was taken by the current owner. The wall behind it is about 2,5 m tall. I have only seen the trunks in the dark with the flashlight on my mobile but it looked like multiple trunks up to 10cm wide. The base under the ground could be big.

Even smaller ones can make good bonsai, I have several as root over rock. Cuttings root easily.

Paul, thanks, just the sort of tonic we need in the middle of winter. A few more species to add to the shopping list!! (In my dreams)

Lee Verhorevoort usually has some for sale, they are more advanced than cuttings so the price is more. Very often imported in and root on rock, almost an instant tree!!

Lee is a trader at the Swindon 'Winter Image' show on Sunday the 26th Feb 2017............ think I have mentioned it a few times..... :132doh:
