Healthy is good. Any plans? Looks to me like it needs to continue to grow for a couple of years to beef up. |

If the layer produces a better root flare then the tree can have 2 seasons where I will let the lowest branch grow as long as possible while controlling the top. Whatever trunk thickening I get in those 2 years will have to do. This is not a particularly good tree but the autumn and spring colours make it worth having. |

Update. It leafed-out well 20190428_144706 by BrendanR2012, on Flickr This is the view I met when pulling it out of the big pot. The buried pot was hidden under a mess of roots. 20190428_144755 by BrendanR2012, on Flickr Time to sever the layer and see what emerges: 20190428_145724 by BrendanR2012, on Flickr 20190428_145732 by BrendanR2012, on Flickr Not perfect, but pretty good. better than what went before. The lower section was completely dead. I have used this technique a few times - it always kills the lower section, so not recommended unless that's OK. Also may be risky if the layer does not take? |

Looks pretty good to me. Yes - the bottom will always die off as you're starving the original roots. You can just about get away with it if the top roots quickly and the base pushes out some new growth. Of course if layering above low growth if its there, will feed the original roots and keep them alive. |

Excellent spread of root Brendan. That should give you a really good nebari. |

Update. Here's how it was a month ago: 20220403_100636 by BrendanR2012, on Flickr 20220403_100613 by BrendanR2012, on Flickr And today: 20220503_200535 by BrendanR2012, on Flickr Plus a closer view of the base. The root flare is pretty good - the pic doesn't do it justice. 20220503_200606 by BrendanR2012, on Flickr |

Nice, I'm liking the roots and the ramification. |

Ramification has been the biggest challenge. Once I had the main branches in the right places and approaching the desired thickness then it took about 3 seasons of cutting back leggy growth before I started to get short enough internodes to build from. I don't feed it until the first leaves have hardened off. That also seems to help. |
