End of last year, I removed two old budleia (butterfly trees) from my garden. They are both of slightly different species as I can tell by the colour of the trunk and the leaves. I put them aside in pots just in case and they're coming up with plenty of shoots. Both are about 60 to 70cm height and the trunks are about 15 to 20 cm in diameter. One has dead wood from top to bottom. Quite dramatic... so now I am getting excited that those two chunky projects could turn well... Anyone ever played with this specie? Any tips? (I will post pictures maybe later today) Ben |

Some of them do have stunning trunks but they are not often used as they do have quite coarse growth. The biggest problem though is they bloom on new growth so,unlike something like the wisteria, you have to have a lot of untidy foliage before you get the flowers. |

I'm sure if you put it into the search Smithy had a great example of one he'd worked at for a good while and almost sure he wrote about it in here |

Thank you I will try to contact them. Here are the pics as promised. Big work this winter on carving the one on the right but it was worth it I think. What you think? |

Hi Ben All I can say about this species is they aren't the best for bonsai but they are worth doing. The plus side is they grow quickly and they don't mind being pot bound as it will give you smaller leaves and flowers over time and if you're careful you can wire small branches and twigs into place. The only down side with them is if you don't give them winter protection you can get a fair bit of die back in the twig structure and sometimes you could lose a branch other than that as long as you don't let them dry out they're almost bullet proof. Cheers Nigel. |

We used to grow Budweiser Saligna in South Africa. The leaves miniaturise to the extent (100mm down to 5mm) that they did not produce enough energy for the roots. We used to give them a year off no and again to grow wild. One problem was that each branch seemed to have its own root. We used to cut back in stages to prevent root dieback. David |

Thank you for sharing your experience David. I have plenty of small leaves so hopefully it’s okay. It’s still in development but I am happy so far. Latest pics... |
