Hi!

Anyone uses Miracle Gro Water Soluble All Purpose Plant Food - NPK 24-8-16?
If so, what amount do you mix with water for bonsai trees?

The package has instructions with different concentrations, but for bonsai might be diferent from the ones provided.

It's too high in nitrates for my bonsai but I do use it on the veggies. If you use it regularly for bonsai, I would opt for the very weakest dilution at two week intervals through the fastest growth period of Summer.

Bite the bullet and buy some Bio Gold.

It ain't cheap compared to its competitors but just one season applying it and you will know why it is that price.

You may need to cut pellets in half for really small trees but it really is the donkeys whats not.

On the topic of plant food anyone after a low N fertiliser might drop by Poundland who are selling bottles of liquid Hydro Coco PK Boost. Not tried it personally.

It depends .... I use it plus chicken manure on trees in development. Full strength and every 10 days to 2 weeks. If you want to hang a non existent branch structure on a bare trunk you want it extra vigourous. I should add that my mix is inorganic and very free draining - any excess the tree doesn't need is washed through. DON'T do this if you grow in organics.

A more specific question you might want to ask is what are my growing aims and how can the fertiliser help me to reach those goals? Can you tell me what you want to achieve? Eg, trunk thickening, refinement & ramification, etc?

IMO there's a sliding scale of fertilising - the frequency and strength being inversely proportional to the level of refinement.

I think I share that view, it depends on the stage of development and purpose. I think also our own lifestyle too because slow release can save some time.

I am using bio gold on refined trees along with sea weed, I have a forest that was planted up about 15 months ago that needs bulking up somewhat (branches) what would you advise? I am using chicken poo with sea weed is there anything else that could be added?

IMHO one of the all round best fertilisers for Bonsai is green dream from Kaizen Bonsai.

Thank you for your answers.
However, I only asked about Miracle Gro (amount diluted in water), not about the best fertiliser, but thanks for the suggestions.

paulpash: My bonsai are all pre-bonsai (young trees). I do not want refinement at this stage, but would like the trees to develop the trunks and main branches. Overall just a boost in all structures of the tree.
I am following Walter Pall's suggestion (overfeeding, agressive watering, modern substrate).
