This is mine a month ago. Since this photo it's put out 6 inch extensions and needs pruning again. This is it's fourth year with me. FYI - it's being ground layered to create better roots / nebari.

And a year after I got it - Christmas 2014

My first tree was a CE with the typical s bend, I layered it out.

Here's mine. A number of things to sort out, and I'm forever tempted to layer off the boring top half and start again, but I seem to keep putting it off. But it's a big old S shape CE, and there's some decent pads when it's in fighting shape

I have stuck to the plan, and here we are.

The lowest branch is now almost thick enough that it is in proportion to the other higher branches. I have left a long sacrifice branch growing off the lowest branch. It emerges from underneath the branch, so I can happily cut it off when the time comes without worrying about an ugly scar.

Next I am going to develop the pads. I plan to let the pads on the lower branches widen considerably - I want a triangular shape from top to bottom, so you can see they need to be about 4 - 5 times longer and wider.

My mum and two sisters know i fiddle about with trees, and dropped hints.

So, i gave each of them a typical `S` chinese elm.Not as old as those shown on here, but i take loads of cuttings of the CE`s do basic styling, stick them in a plastic pot and give them to anyone who expresses an interest.

Within a few weeks, one was dead as my youngest sister apparently, " didn't realise it had to be watered". ::dunno:

The other two are asking for help `cos it's got straggly`.

An online walk through is in the offing, they live 200 miles away btw.
