Lonicera are bullet proof, fast and easy.

In the last wind storm this one blew over and the top soil fell out. I did not even notice it for a few days. When I did see it I was impressed with the sheer weight of new roots that it has added. I decided it needed a serious haircut.

This is probably the new front, but way too early to decide. The straight cut thick trunk that stands up in the middle is dead. I'll let it rot a bt then pull it out.

Update.

This one had a good year and put on a lot of growth, which I simply trimmed off every few weeks to get it back budding. It responded very well.

In February 2020 I was happy that the main new branch structure was in place, and that it was time to start developing it. I had deliberately forced it to grow its main branches straight upwards, which may look a bit odd in this pic. You will see later in this post what the reason was. It gave it a very serious haircut.

I let it grow from February to April, when It had another haircut, and more refining. You can see that the top middle of the tree is bald. All the growth comes from the sides, and quite low down.

Using zip ties I used the vertical growing branches to do a "comb-over". This is sort of like a tanuki but where the dead tree is also the live tree.

Since April I have been feeding it and letting it build up a lot of bushy new growth. This is it in May, after only a month.

Another trim and more food, sun and the amazing lockdown summer weather.

By the end of June the primary branches had already thickened up and where they were trimmed they had bifurcated into secondary branches. Another clean-up was all it needed.

The bald spot is now completely gone!

This tree loooks decent from any angle. With that massive trunk I am going for a really wide low tree, and this is a possible front. Hence I am growing out those skinny long branches. They need to thicken considerably so that they can bring the tree out wider.
