Hello all. I have a pear tree experiment I've been given. It's in a bucket full of potting compost, and it's starting to shoot. In the new year I was planning of just cutting it down to where I plan to start growing. But on reflection, where I want to cut it, it'll ideal for air layering. My question is, I know I'm too late this year, and the tree isn't really healthy enough to cope with an airlayer but when is the right time to start an air layer? See picture for reference where I plan to air layer 20170722_081516 by Martin Matthews, on FlickrAnd where the black lines are is where I was thinking of air layering 3 bonsai for the cost of 1. 20170722_140206 by Martin Matthews, on FlickrThanks all. |

Most people start them in spring once the leaves have hardened off. |

Yes, it is probably a bit late now unless a very fast growing species. I wouldn't have another Pear in my garden as they are very susceptible to blight and rust, which spreads to Junipers. |

I too got rid of a pear tree because of it was too vulnerable and i valued junis more. It's up to u but I'd decide one or the other. |
