Hey all, I popped into Dobbies and found six small hawthorns, with lovely pale trunks, in the clearance section at the lovely price of two for 69p :). I bought them all and have chucked them in the ground at the back of the garden. I'll leave them and make the roots shallower in the spring, other than that I'm not really sure what to focus on. I have never even tried a group planting so any advice would be welcome. I've seen a lot of forest plantings where individually the trees are very slim, tall for the girth of the trunk, yet still look good together. Most advice I've found seems to focus more on arranging than developing the trees, I have no idea whether just to push for traditional attributes! https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B__PIaZwSgkPS3BQOVJjdkJpR0U/view?usp=drivesdk Sorry for the dog! |

In group or forest plantings it is good to have a dominant tree which has the strongest trunk near to a point one third of the way along the container's length and a little further forward than the middle line. Other trees should be placed further back with diminishing size as they get further from the viewer. This gives an impression of more depth to the composition. In your case, another, thicker hawthorn may be needed to give variety and an uneven number to the group. Place them together before taking them from the original pots. They can then be moved around into different experimental placings without a lot of stress to the roots. Groups are always fun to make. |

Thanks. I'll keep an eye out for an additional one with a bit more girth! |
