If you do buy hedging plants try to get ones with low branches. I bought some two years ago thinking it didn't matter too much because they'd backbud when I chopped them, and that a group planting would hide away some undesirable features. Turns out to be a bit of a rookie error - beech aren't the best at backbudding - I got nothing lower down the trunk on any of them, and I've all but abandoned the idea!!

Hi Korean,

May thanks for the tip - I'll keep a close watch. Please don't give up on yours - with help from the guys on WeeTrres I am sure you will be able to resurrect it. Any pics?

Andy

Really like this, Bobby. Will be happy if I can make anything half as good :-)

You've got me into the idea of a beech forest with this post. Beech are just about the regional native species here on the South Downs so young trees are not difficult to find. Just off with the dog to see if I can locate some suitable material.

You've trained your dog to find bonsai trees ?

:07hysterical: The stuff he finds is usually dead but it keeps him amused while I find mine.

Well I got back with my haul and decided to pot them up in large pots for the winter. That way I'll know what's survived the uprooting before designing my forest. I have a variety of thicknesses so they've been roughly planted in pots of similar size trunks

Well, wait and see what survives before you get too excited Gary. I can easily get replacements though and I haven't had too much trouble with transplanting young beech in the past.
