Done more work on this today. Pulled the left branch down a little. It's really stiff so I'm going to pull it down gradually over time. Worried about breaking the branch. I've also wired the back branch. I plan to reduce the size of the apex eventually.

For the last couple of years this Mugo has had cracked bark vertically up the trunk at around this time of year. I assume it is normal and just the trunk increasing its girth. What do you think?

Looking good and what great progress in 4 years.
If it was mine I would be looking at removing that second jin up on the right as I dont think it enhances the image IMHO!

Thanks Betula, I agree about that Jin. I will definitely shorten it, if not remove it completely.

Very nice! By the looks you kept a big chunk of the previous soil / I did exactly the same with my mugo.
Harry Harrington says you can repot mugos in late-summer, so I will try that this year, probably early september.

The only trouble with keeping the old root ball in a lump and not reducing the base of it, is that it sits far too high and is exposed to the elements. This will cause these roots to dry out very fast, so they die and not help the tree.

Yes I have planted it far too high in the pot
I have another Mugo and have successfully repotted in late summer in the past. Thanks for the comments.

After what Paul said above, I've just re-repotted this (twice now in two weeks). I have lowered it into the pot and it looks loads better now. Just hoping I haven't overworked the root system ::dunno:
