But is it really serious? I seem to remember hearing that earthworms make good soil with their digestion and the bacteria from their gut can be beneficial to grass soil for example. But what about in bonsai soil?

I've discovered a couple of them (1-2cm) in the soil/substrate of two sageretia cuttings. My initial reaction was just get rid of them because otherwise they'll grow and grow. To get rid of them I will have to repot, they're too slippery and elusive to flush out. And I don't want half a worm rotting in my soil.

I guess they somehow got into the plastic pots in summer when I had them on the garden for watering.

What would you do? leave the worms because they're not a problem? or repot now before winter??

I'd leave them. If and when they don't like it they'll move out. I imagine they mostly won't like the granular soil we tend to use.

While we do tend to panic over our little trees, earthworms are a good thing. Not totally necessary in a bonsai tree and probably a lot happier outside in the soft earth but not going to do any damage as long as they are only earthworms .

They'll turn an organic soil to sludge.

I take them out when re-potting. Not a problem, really, but they will find their way back in.

I use about one third organic so I suppose I'll have 1/3 organic sludge by spring.

Put the pots up nearly to their tops in water and the little blighters will gather on the surface. However, they may have laid eggs!
