I have a Hawthorn that the wire has been left on a bit too long and will result in some damage to the bark when it is removed. Is it safer to leave wire removal until the late winter/early spring or take it off now? |

Well, I would take it off now. I usually do some pruning on deciduous this time of year, after leaf fall, and don't really suffer any ill effects. Its always good practice to give a tree some winter protection, even if its is only keeping it out of excessive wind. Hawthorns are very robust trees. I am sure it will bounce back in the spring. |

I would remove it now, same as Nick. |

Now it is then. I line my trees against a sheltered easterly facing wall of the house for winter protection. |

With Hawthorn they will often backbud well enough to restart. |

First spring with a hawthorn for me this year and if next spring's growth is only half of what is was this year, I would still have no problem recovering from a few dead branches due to poor watering (when I was away in August...). So I'd say like the above: remove and if it's too bad and the branches are young, cut it off. |
