Nice one Richard. Have fun with this. I'm glad one survived. I thought Penny's comment on the branch proportions is interesting. Recently in club, Will Baddeley made the same comment on a privet where I thought the branches were OK. Perhaps we've all got accustomed to the thinner branches that have become quite common. (Probably because we're not spending enough time building our primary branches). |

Yes its a difficult one Gary. On the photo there is a branch on the left and you can see where I shortened this earlier in the year and I now have 2 shoots. if I let the 2 shoots grow out I would expect to get more thickening than with just the one shoot. Although privet should easily bud back if the branches are cut back some trees are not as forthcoming. |

I trimmed this privet back at the end of last year and started on a bit of carving. 20181213_111238 by richard borrell, on Flickr It grew out really well through the year and was trimmed through the year so at the weekend i have cleaned up the branches and wired into position. The branches are becoming relatively thick so it needed to be done to get the movement i want without causing damage. aug 19 by richard borrell, on Flickr aug19 by richard borrell, on Flickr I have not touched the roots or lifted the tree out of the pot this year, I will lift in spring and hopefully find some decent finer roots as originally it had nothing. I can then start to get the pot down to a good size. |

What did you treat the wood with? My large privets took a couple of years before they started throwing out fine roots. |

I only treated the exposed wood with deadwood preserver. This area was damaged when the builder ripped it out of my nieces garden and then I did a bit of carving. Hopefully because it put on good growth this year should also have grown roots but will wait till spring to find out |

Looking good! Our neighbour wanted to rip the old line of privet up that is between our driveways, As it's my border (And she being a soliocitor!) She asked my permission, I told it was fine, Whatever she wanted to do was ok with me, Didn't realise she'd get on with it so quickly as when I got home from work the next day, It was gone and new stuff put in!! I have a little privet that I bought from Markham Grange Last year, Actually bought it from a pal who was standing!! It's starting to fill out a little now! John |

Like yours it gives a dark tone which is good against the light wood. |

Decided the time was right to see what roots this piece of privet had grown. i wanted to get it down into a smaller pot, it's been in a 10 inch deep plastic pot since i first planted it a couple of years ago. i only had a plastic training pot of the right size to hand so will have to find a suitable pot once we get back to being able to visit a show. There was a big chunk of solid wood underground and most of the roots were coming out at ground level so managed remove about 50% of the underground wood . 20200406_111841 by richard borrell, on Flickr 20200406_113044 by richard borrell, on Flickr 20200406_114302 by richard borrell, on Flickr 20200406_120150 by richard borrell, on Flickr 20200406_120221 by richard borrell, on Flickr |
