This is a Hornbeam I'd marked three months ago because of the promising nebari. It should have been lifted two weeks ago but because the ground is so dry the nursery have not lifted any trees yet. Andy got out his trusty spade and got the tree out and bagged for me. It was eight feet tall when collected and was cut down to four feet to get in the car.

I bit the bullet and removed the taproot endeavoring to save as many fine roots as possible. Hopefully, there will be enough left to help the tree survive. I've planted it in a very large ceramic pot for the moment with a good sprinkling of rootgrow mixed in with the substrate.

Here's the tree in its new home. Fingers and legs crossed and I'll see how it does in the spring. It's now five feet shorter than when lifted.

Bobby, Andy has not lifted the other trees yet but hopes to do so in a week or so when the ground is a bit softer.

Hornbeams are resilient, it might be a little slow with growth next season but the season after should really take off, hard to say...

Here's one i got from Andy's field in spring and it was already in leaf, i reduced the rootball as much as this

the below pic was as much growth i'd got over the summer, next season it will really begin to take off in this training tub. so they can take hard cut backs, but might not be as vigorous for the first season.

Hornbeam, Elm and Pyracantha regenerate roots really well - I think you should be fine and good luck with it. Update us in Spring when it pops.

Nice one Grant. I see the collection is growing. All you need now is some good labels to identify your trees!

Hi Bobby Paul & Gary,
Thanks for your comments. I did not really want to repot at present but having looked at the roots I could not restrain myself. Hope you're all correct about the resilience of Hornbeams
Gary, any idea where I can get some decent labels?

Grant
