I have not worked out how to make Yews 'behave'. This rescued Yew from a garden centre has thrived during the last year in my garden, but it will not back bud. I am tempted to hard prune in a last attempt to make progress. I need to shrink the branches from long & straggly to short. What time of year is it best to try this? Late winter? Thanks.

What do you see in this material in terms of

- final height
- trunk line?

Having an idea of what you want to create as a final image is the first step to getting a logical plan to achieve it.

What is the moisture in the joints? Looks like you might have some sort of borer there - and that affects health.

The thing I learned with my yews is they backbud when they are excessively healthy. This tree is not yet anywhere near peak health. Put it in a shady spot, treat it for bugs, water it well and rotate it every month for 2 years. It should back bud by then if mine are anything to go by.

I'd agree with that - as a general rule deciduous trees can be cut back to induce back budding. Evergreens usually need to be vigorous to back bud - then you cut back.

Healthy yew (taxus baccata) will show long fresh, green, floppy growth in spring. Here's one of mine from a few years back just starting to regain health. See the stark colour difference between the old and new growth? You need to see that before you start to chop your tree, or you'l even risk losing it.

You will also see flower buds.

Only when the tree has this type of spring growth can you work on it and expect back-budding. There's an excellent youtube video by Tony Tickle on yew pruning that explains it all. And it starts with him showing a yew in spectacular good health.

My experience of Yew has been similar. I've either killed or slowed anything I've worked too hard. Best for it to be super vigorous first IMO. Like Brendan says fresh growth is a good sign.

:Big Thumb: I agree with all of the above. Wait until it shows good health. My I'd photo is from where I walk the dogs most days and these yews are several centuries old and they still back bud so be patient.

Ok - hadn't even noticed the moisture in joints. I'll treat it well over winter and then see in spring.
