Evening all. Been accepted into a show and I've been looking at accent plants, but I seriously have no idea what to get/look at.

If I get anything I'd like something I can keep with my trees, all year round. Nothing I need to bring indoors as my cats like their greens.

Any recommendations fellow people.

This is a great post, Martin, I'm looking forward to the replies. I always assumed certain accents are more suited to specific species or styles but honestly don't actually have a clue!

One of my favourites are miniature Hostas, this one below is a Miniature Hosta Venusta and both the foliage and flowers compliment the trees well, just beware of slugs ! ...

Just look in the alpine section of a good nursery, most will happily stay outdoors all year, although I tend to fleece some of mine.

Look for something with a small leaf, and maybe a flower during part of the year that doesn't get too high, as the accent shouldn't be higher than the stand used for the tree.

Just have a play with different plants, I invite a specialist alpine grower to our club meeting during the year, they get to sell their plants and we get to spend the evening planting them up in various pots that the members bring in. There will be loads of links on the Swindon web site, just use the search box for 'Accents'

I recently found this nursery and a friend bought me some 0-10cm high plants for Christmas. They arrived in good condition, so you may wish to have a look...

You could also try some hardy ferns, particularly varieties native to dry stone walls and rock faces as they are well adapted to growing in small pots and trays. Two of my favourites are Asplenium trichomanes , Spleenwort and Phylitis scolopendrium, the Harts Tongue Fern. These two examples are native, evergreen and totally hardy. They provide a subtle accent for most trees
