Post subject:  Advice for a pot?

Hi folks,
I have this pine and this pot. I know that looks big on a picture but actually what's left over is only 2 inches of space on a right if the root ball is on a far left. Like the idea of it but not sure if it's ok for this tree? What do you think?

Hi to be honest the new pot looks to big and powerful looking for such a sinus tree. Look for a pot that's more feminine with the colour of the pot you have in the picture. I can't make out if the tree and pot are in the new pot or not so if it's not in the pot take the tree out of the old pot and just place it the new one and take a couple of pictures this will you and members of the forum a better idea of if the pot is right. Hope this helps.
Cheers Nigel.

Lovely tree. I think the pot's a little bit formal but could work. However, it looks enormous in the picture - I'd suggest the same as Nigel, temporarily pop the tree out of the old pot and into the new one to see what it looks like.

I'm no great pot expert but my instinct would be something narrower but deeper a bit like this.

Discus - whichever pot you ultimately go for (I like Daryl's suggestion), position this lovely tree a little towards one end of the pot. Don't plant it in the centre - it will look out of balance.

Amazing what a difference the camera angle makes. The tree to pot ratio looks much better in your second picture!

Yes on first picture looks enormous pot. That's my intention to be placed far left John.

The pot still looks big, can you do what Nigel said and take the tree out of the old pot and sit it in the oval and then take a front picture, it will not harm the tree to slip it out, the root mass will be solid.

I have tried to take it out, it's solid rock glued to the pot, and it's not even wired with a pot. I think in spring will have to brake the pot to take the bagger out of it.

Slip an old knife or even a purpose made tool [potting sickle] down the inside of the pot, it should make it much easier to remove.

That pot looks a little big, the tree would prefer to be quite root bound. If you aren't sure take it to a show or to a potter to find the right pot............. depending on what you want to do with the tree i.e. improve the growth, show it at the club or just to enjoy in your garden.
