Hi folks,

I'm after a bit of advice. Because of my ongoing back problem, I am concerned that I'm not going to be able to do all of my repots in spring. If I start reporting early, what are the likely issues going to be? I have a shed where I can put the trees post repot to give them some protection from frost - is this enough? Will repotting early affect their growth this coming year? Is January - early February way to early to start repotting?

Thanks folks,

Andy

I have already re potted a few of my small ones as they have started to bud. I protect them in an unheated greenhouse and they will be fine.

As I don't have the room the large trees will have to wait until end of Feb/March when I hope that the really cold weather is over

Yours will be fine in the shed.

Thanks Paul.

I did a few airlayers last year - 2 on a Shishigashera Maple and 4 on a blackthorn. Will it be ok to do these now too?

I would leave them for the whole of this year, there isn't any hurry to sort their roots out and better that they build up a good strong root ball. Then do them next year. Their roots will still be young and soft, any re pot would just damage them.

The idea of leaving a repot until the buds begin to swell is to allow stored carbs and sugars in the vascular tissues in the roots to have at least partially moved to the new foliage thus minimising any reduction in health caused by root removal. Also as the tree is then about to come into leaf it will quickly generate the hormones to stimulate new root growth. In theory if you do it earlier you gain no benefit and have a higher risk of weakening the tree. However as most will testify there usually very little problem associated with re-potting early especially with established or healthy trees. As somebody told me once, the best time to do any task is when you have the time. I'm doing as much as I can in the middle of Feb in one big week long session just to make sure I get it done before it's too late which can be more of an issue.

Can I just mention that whenever you re pot you retard the tree in some degree. If you are re potting do it for a good reason and not for the sake of it.

Maybe the roots need sorting to improve the nebari, or you want to put it into a different pot to improve the tree before showing it, or you need to change the potting angle or add root grafts etc etc.

It's a known fact that in the UK we tend to re pot much too often, the tree will be happy in a pot with the right mix of soil for 3/4 years, pines even longer. Although the soil mixture may look as if it has broken down and needs changing, when you lift it out the lower soil is in fact alright. It's a case of knowing your trees and spotting the ones that don't drain well [so need re potting]

A lot of club members and those new to the hobby just like to tinker and re pot everything in the garden..... every year :132doh: :07hysterical:

I've got three Japanese Maples that I've had for a couple of years that I've never had out of their pots and I've no idea how long they were in them before I got them. These are the trees I particularly want to do - following Paul's advice I'm going to leave last year's layers alone for this year

Crikey Bobby, you're off and running early! What have you done so far?
