generally i would buy trees that i can work straight out the box.i wouldnt buy anything that requires layering to be useful.look for movement in trunks...established branching that give options for creating tapered trunk lines or movement. good nebari or some flare at the base. branching up n down the trunk. at some of the nurserys ive been to the trees have been knawed on by rabbits...i like these types of characteristics. |

>Ask when it was last repotted > Is the pot quality or will it need replacing? Is it mica, plastic etc... factor that into your assessment of worth. >Look for any telltale signs of neglect, poor workmanship, eg pearlwort on the surface (poor drainage), tie in wires showing (often a sign that they can't be bothered to hide them), big wounds poorly finished off, wiring marks, crap compost type mixes you would find in garden centre stock. >A big disadvantage buying deciduous trees now is that you cannot see the foliage so cannot assess it's vigour / health - does it come with a guarantee that if it doesn't leaf out it can be returned? >For evergreens such as pines look at needle colour, if tips are brown there may be a fungal / health issue. Remember, things like Cryptomeria and Mugo Wintergold will look 'off' in Winter (this is normal colouring). >Will areas of the tree need carving for future development? Do you have the tools to accomplish the job or are you prepared to buy them? >Look for and steer clear of major faults that can't be easily corrected, eg inverse or poor taper, poor branch structure, foliage miles away from trunk (evergreens), crossing or one sided nebari, obvious health issues (fungal cankers etc); >Ask the vendor if it's a flowering tree did it flower last season? Many trees like wisteria and hawthorn are reluctant to flower in bonsai culture. >Finally, the main things to look for are trunk and nebari - these are the hardest to change. Go for as high a quality as you can. |

Be interested to know what the nursury is like, Im about halfway between Lutterworth and Greenwoods up in Arnold And Greenwoods always seems the obvious choice. David Chishire's place is about the same the other way aswell So ive never actually made it down to Lutterworth. |

Buy something that cannot be described as nursery-stock-somewhat-refined. Not a tree you could develop yourself if you had say £20 to spend on raw material and 5 - 10 years to work on it. |

Yes to all the above. I'd focus on nebari and trunk as the main things and basically buy something you think you can improve and make something better from in a few years. |

FWIW I went there several years ago and was there like 5 mins and walked out - some poor quality stuff and the nicer stuff was pricey so I'm better off growing my own. IMO if you're not into spending a lot of cash on material yet then you can't go far wrong going to the many bonsai boot fairs dotted around the country or Greenwoods - quality trees and quality owners but the dog would be better if he had a barrel of whiskey for customers :) |

Went to Lutterworth last year and found the same as Paul. Tons of low quality plants, and the one bench or so of decent material was overpriced. In terms of Lutterworth v Greenwoods, there's no comparison. |
