Hi all,
Just a quick question, does anyone got any experience with this moss Sagina Subulata? Just to cover the top of the soil on few patches.

Don't go near it, its not a moss it's a very nightmare that will infect all your pots, clog drainage, and you'll never ever get rid of it. One of the worst weeds out there. Might look pretty with the little flowers at first but it's as welcome in a bonsai garden as Japanese knotweed.

[edit: I see the software changed one of my words to 'very'. It wasn't 'very' originally. You can probably guess what it was].

Thank you Tom, appreciate it, will stay away from it.

Any suggestions for a good quality moss? Or just scrapy any from outside?

Yes. Go for patches with shorter growth (rather than the long straggly sorts), which tend to grow in sunnier areas. Scraped off paving slabs etc works well.

I use whatever I can find scraped off paving or even growing in my lawn (or get samples from fellow hobbyists). I've use a mixture in some of my groups but tend to find one moss always seems to dominate the others presumably due to shade and water levels. The shorter mosses are usually the sturdiest but I have a soft spot for some of the longer ones as well as they are the more attractive and if kept under control (they spread quickly once they've taken hold) act almost like an accent.

Is this that pearlwort stuff? Horrible stuff. Seems to have invaded most of my pots and seems to love cat litter. I really liked the way it looked and kept it trimmed like a lawn. But then I got concerned about drainage and tried to remove it and found a thick blanket of fibrous roots like cotton wool covering the whole pot, removed it all and it grew back in a few days. I wish I'd nipped it in the bud

Yep I made the same mistake a few years back. I now remove it on sight but it's come in with a few new trees I've been given and is very tricky to get rid off as you say.

It just keeps coming back, so I just keep gardening it away. Nothing else works IMHO. I notice it's also called 'Irish Moss' (as well as the other things it's called), which goes part-way towards explaining Discus' original question.
