Post subject:  Hello and potting help

Hi,

I've recently bought some seeds online to grow a few bonsai trees, but I'm finding a lot of conflicting information on how to grow them and was wondering if anyone could help.

Firstly, do I go plant them straight into a small tray style pot (like the type that you find pre-grown trees in), or in a regular plant pot then transfer them at a later date. I've seen both done online and not sure which one would be best, although the guides and videos for the regular plant pot ones seems to mean to have to cut the roots down when transferring them to the tray style pot.

Also, I've got 20 Apple tree seeds, 200 multicoloured banana tree seeds and 20 seeds of another fruit tree, although for the life of me I can't remember what. What would be the best way of planting them? My gardening experience is knowing how to cut the grass with the lawn mower and that is it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Steve and welcome.

Firstly, the bad news. I am assuming Bananas trees are the same plant that edible bananas come from and are absolutely not suitable for Bonsai. Their leaves are huge and don't have any sort of branch ramification which we need for Bonsai. Plus, they are a tropical plant and would require winter protection if grown in the UK.

Apple seeds are better, but you just don't know what will come up. They can be variable and are based on crab apple trees. Ideally you want a small leaf for a bonsai and you may not get this with seed. Others on here may give better advice.

We always say on here that the best way to get into Bonsai is to either buy a small Bonsai tree, or get to your local nurseries and garden centres and pick up a few shrubs with small leaves.

If you want to have a go at seed, I would recommend conifers such as Larch and Scots Pine. Cuttings are possibly better as they can give you a seasons head start.

I can second what nick said about going to the garden centre, get a juniper, lonicera nitida, cotoneaster or buxus and have a go at styling. Look for a thick base of trunk and one with plenty of bends in it. Then try to make it look like a tree with pruning and maybe some bending. Good luck!

Hi Steve welcome to weetrees and to bonsai.

I don't think it'll matter too much if you use a seed tray or a pot to germinate the seeds as long as you follow the instructions to be successful with either. If you get successful germination it's going to take many years of ground growing (or a very large pot) to get a good bonsai from them and you'd have to focus on specific ground growing skills to avoid wasting those years.

If I was you I'd go ahead and have fun but as the others have said you may not have the best species for Bonsai so perhaps something more suitable and with a reasonable sized trunk to start with may be a more fulfilling route at least for the next few years.
